Description

Edinburgh Infectious Diseases and Global Health Academy Workshop

Exploring the Interface between Communicable and Non-communicable Diseases

While the Millennium Development Goals attempted to tackle some of the infectious diseases impacting many living in low income countries little emphasis was placed on recognising or responding to the rapidly escalating burden of non-communicable diseases. As we move into the post-2015 era exploring the interface between communicable and non-communicable diseases will become key to addressing many of the major global health problems.

To help bring together researchers from across the University of Edinburgh to think strategically about how we might approach these questions, Edinburgh Infectious Diseases and the Global Health Academy are organising a half-day workshop.

The event will be held on the afternoon of Thursday 22 May 2014 in the Ashworth Laboratories, Kings Buildings. The workshop will be chaired by Dr Richard Smith, former editor of the British Medical Journal and now director of the Ovations initiative combatting chronic disease in the developing world.

The afternoon will consist of short talks, highlighting the major existing challenges in both the communicable and non-communicable disease fields, followed by round-table discussions exploring new opportunities for collaboration or innovative research. A provisional programme is given below.

We hope that you will be able to participate and look forward to welcoming you on 22 May.

With very best wishes,

Rick Maizels (Director Edinburgh Infectious Diseases) and Liz Grant (Deputy Director Global Health Academy)
